There was once a time when I religiously watched Glee every week. Back then, it hardly ever failed to impress. That was then though, and this is now and these days ... I'm straying from Glee. I'd go as far as to say, I don't even watch it anymore. But back in the days when Glee actually had a plot that I enjoyed (circa season 1 and a quarter of the way through season 2), they made some pretty awesome covers. And these are my favourites: (I tried to embed the videos but most wouldn't play. something about copyright or w/e so enjoy following the links! :D)
1. Smile (Charlie Chaplin)
This is a nice song. I'd never really heard it before I saw it on Glee but as soon as they started singing it, I knew it'd be one of my favourites. I still listen to it when I'm feeling a little blue.
2. Toxic - Britney Spears
Now, I HAD to find an embeddable video for this song. I went through a fairly small but measurable amount of trouble to get this video and embed it SO YOU BETTER WATCH IT. This performance was just really really really awesome and so well done. Plus the arrangement of the music was ... simple but effective :)
3. I'll Stand By You - The Pretenders
One of Corey Monteith's (Finn) best songs IMHO, his voice really suited it. And, like basically all of the songs I've chosen, it was really relevant to the context of the show. Finn finds out that his girlfriend, Quinn, is pregnant. Thinking that it's his baby, he comes to the realisation that he will do anything to protect the child. He was freaking singing this song TO THE CHILD. TO ITS ULTRASOUND PHOTO. WHAT MORE DO YOU NEEED. Ahhh he has such a good heart :') Too bad he's kind of an idiot lol.
4. Keep Holding On - Avril Lavigne
This became one of my favourites when it was brilliantly played right after Quinn's whole life falls apart - she gets kicked out of the Cheerios, kicked out of her house, she's got a baby on the way and the father isn't taking anything seriously. It's a hard enough life.. so even though she was a bitch back then, you can't help but feel sorry for her. And what's the perfect way to tell a person that they're not alone and that life get's better? THROUGH AN AVRIL LAVIGNE SONG OF COURSE. It was nice to see this at that low low low point in the episode.
5. Don't Stop Believing - Journey
I don't know about you, but when someone says Glee this song automatically starts playing in my head. It kind of just marked the beginning of the phenomenon and for years to come you know fo' sho it'll be used in graduations, talent shows and glee clubs all over the world. Such is the power of Glee.
6. Rose's Turn
Awesome awesome song. It's in the musical theatre style so that makes it interesting already. But what makes it one of my favourites is that Chris Colfer (Kurt) sings sooo well here. Usually he gets given girlish songs with a lot of high notes and nothing really substantial so he never really gets to show off his pipes. In this song he does. And you can hear how strong his voice really is ... it's awesome :)
7. Single Ladies - Beyonce
I recommend you watch this video. It's funny in a weird, bizarre way. As funny as a bunch of huge footballers doing the single ladies dance can be. And they're actually pretty good at it haha :) YEAH, FOOTBALL (lol)
8. Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol/Generation X
Artie sings this. His one dream is to be a dancer but he can't; he's in a wheelchair. Poetic nooo? Also, it has a nice jazzy feel to it that I really like.
9. Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
This is probably the only song I have up here from season 2 haha. But how can I not? The energy is great. The vocals are great. Rachel isn't in it - great! Darren Criss is in it, who I loved in the AVPM series on Youtube. It's the beginning of Klaine man...
And that's the end. Where's number ten, you ask? Well, I pretend not to hear you. So goodbye! Till next time :)
